Efficiency, but at what cost?

Get Elon Musk’s money out of politics—for good.

When Musk applies start-up methodology to our 248-year-old Republic, he ignores fundamental differences in purpose and scale. While 90% of start-ups fail, government failure could mean collapsed essential services for 330 million Americans.

Musk ignores the principle “slow is smooth, smooth is fast”—a philosophy embraced by Navy SEALs to reduce errors in complex operations. His decision to prioritize speed over thoughtful action suggests an ignorance that will lead to grave mistakes and will expose us to needless risks.

Due to Musk’s actions, everyone faces vulnerability—including retired workers, their dependents, the elderly who’ve lost spouses, and disabled individuals and their families:

Social Security provides a baseline of income on which workers can draw upon during retirement. It also provides social insurance protection to workers who become disabled and to families whose breadwinner dies. In 2023, 79 percent of Americans opposed cuts to the program.

The Trump administration  plans to cut approximately 7,000 jobs in the Social Security Administration, and shutter some regional offices. While Musk and Trump have vowed not to touch social security benefits, the cuts could have knock-on effects that affect service. Agency phone lines have backed up, preventing staff from handling retirement claims. Warnings that staff shortages, system outages, and DOGE’s ill-considered cuts, are beginning to interfere with Americans’ receiving benefits. Since Musk began meddling, the government wrongly declared a Seattle man dead and clawed back his benefits without notice.

Veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to fire over 70,000 workers, including those supporting cancer treatments, suicide prevention, and prosthetics for veterans.

Home buyers

Buying a home will get riskier. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which addresses complaints from homeowners facing imminent foreclosures, was among the first federal agencies cut with Musk’s chainsaw. The watchdog agency, established to streamline oversight of lenders and financial companies serving consumers after the 2008 housing crisis, is all but shuttered

National security

DOGE fired Federal Aviation Administration workers trained to detect incoming cruise missiles and it let go Department of Energy employees who manage our nation’s nuclear stockpile before the mistakes were revealed and public pressure forced it to reverse the  terminations.

Our communities

Our homes, businesses, and communities will have fewer resources and less resiliency following natural disasters because DOGE has cut staff and systems that monitor and predict floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, and tsunamis, fight wildfires, and coordinate disaster response.

We can no longer allow our voices to be systematically silenced by a billionaire class and a corporate-driven economy as these same entities increasingly shape every aspect of our society and environment.

Our government shouldn’t be Musk’s next corporate acquisition.
